Private sector union calls for general strike on December 8

The private sector workers' union, GSEE, on Wednesday called a 24-hour strike for December 8 to protest the government's ongoing austerity drive.

In a statement, GSEE called for mass rallies on the same day, appealing to workers to back its mission to "put an end, once and for all, to the criminal measures that are being implemented and those which are being planned, condemning every Greek family to poverty and wretchedness."

The civil servants' union, ADEDY, is also planning action in the coming weeks, starting with a morning work stoppage on November 9.

Earlier this week, the union of Greek seamen, PNO, called a 24-hour strike for November 24 to protest pension cuts.
