Sewage, scandals, and storms – the saga of Poseidonos Avenue

On Christmas night, a section of Poseidonos Avenue near Alimos in southern Athens flooded with rainwater and sewage, forcing traffic to a standstill.

Officials blame illegal connections diverting rooftop and yard runoff into the sewer system, causing manhole covers to burst under pressure during heavy rain.

This recurring issue also impacts Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, often leaving streets, homes and shops awash in foul water.

Alimos' mayor decried inadequate infrastructure and cited EYDAP's plans for a new sewer pipeline study by March.

The water and sewerage utility claims about 7,000 illegal connections are the culprits and warns violations could result in water shutoffs.
