Jailed killer organized synagogue arson attack
Authorities have revealed that an Afghan man, Ali N., who was given a life sentence in December for the murder of a 31-year-old Albanian in Athens in May 2023, had organized a failed arson attack on a Jewish synagogue in the Monastiraki area in June, 2024 while in custody.
The planned arson, targeting the synagogue and a nearby hotel, was foiled by authorities, and the perpetrators were apprehended before the flames could spread. The fatal stabbing occurred following an altercation in Omonia between the victim and an Egyptian national.
After the altercation escalated into a violent brawl, the Afghan, 24, joined in and left the Albanian with fatal injuries. He was given a life sentence. Ali N. was convicted along with five other defendants. Two of his co-defendants were also sentenced to life for premeditated murder.
The other three received 10-year sentences....
