Mobile codes to combat prescription fraud

Starting February 3, Greece's National Organization for Healthcare Services (EOPYY) will introduce a one-time password (OTP) system to curb prescription fraud.

Insured individuals will receive a unique mobile code for authorizing prescriptions and health services across five categories, including physiotherapy, special care, and medical supplies.

Inspired by banking security, the system addresses fraudulent prescriptions revealed last summer, which cost millions. Investigations uncovered cases like a cardiologist issuing 500 prescriptions to two foreigners and a pediatrician prescribing 1,350 items to four children.

Before February, insured individuals must verify their mobile numbers via government platforms or citizen service centers.
