Xylokastro fire: Two charred bodies found – Authorities investigate if they are the missing men

The men reportedly encountered firefighters along the way, who urged them to turn back due to the ongoing fire. Unfortunately, they continued into the danger zone.

The fire, which started yesterday, continues to wreak havoc, with six villages evacuated. At present, 330 firefighters are battling the flames with 110 vehicles, 11 ground teams, and periodic assistance from 14 aircraft and 10 helicopters.

A second evacuation alert was issued at 5:00 AM Monday, advising residents of the Pyrgos area in Corinthia to evacuate towards Zacholi, following similar instructions issued at 6:00 PM on Sunday.

Late last night, flames reached the village of Elliniko, reportedly damaging homes. Strong northwest winds have pushed thick smoke towards Corinth.

The Xylokastro-Evrostini municipality also announced that schools in the area would remain closed for the day, prioritizing the safety of students and residents. Authorities urge people to stay informed through official communication channels.

Efforts to contain the fire are hampered by strong winds and difficult terrain, including canyons and ravines. There have been reports of damage to a fire truck cabin.

Authorities remain in emergency mode across multiple regions, including Attica, Central Greece, Western Greece, and the Peloponnese, as firefighters continue their challenging work.

The Civil Protection Ministry, led by Vassilis Kikilias, held an emergency coordination meeting with relevant ministries, security forces, the armed forces, EKAB, and other agencies to manage the crisis.
