Largest equipment purchases since 2004 Games being made for riot police

Greece is planning purchases worth millions of euros to equip the Hellenic Police's (ELAS) riot force with shields, helmets, uniforms, bullet-proof vests and other supplies, including large quantities of tear gas, in anticipation of a fresh push on the northeastern border with Turkey by undocumented migrants and refugees trying to force their way into the European Union.

US Embassy donates PPE to Hellenic Police

The US Embassy in Athens has bolstered the Hellenic Police's defenses against the coronavirus with a donation of masks, gloves and other personal protective equipment.

Monday's donation, which included 15,000 gloves and 8,200 face masks, was personally delivered by US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt to the chief of the Hellenic Police (ELAS), Lieutenant General Michael Karamalakis.

Police dismantle illegal cigarette plant

Police said on Thursday they located a fully equipped illegal tobacco processing and production plant as part of an organized operation in an area of Attica.

Four people were arrested in connection with the case, accused of being members of a criminal organization and running the factory. The case file also includes the landlord, who is being sought by police.

Police issue 18 fines over lack of masks

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) on Wednesday recorded 18 instances in which citizens had not been wearing a mask in an enclosed public space, a police statement said on Thursday.

Of those violations, four were in Western Greece, three on Crete and two in Attica. Since the government began easing the lockdown on May 4, 304 such violations have been recorded nationwide.
