Juncker sees no need for extra measures to conclude Greek bailout review

Greece should not need extra measures to wrap up an ongoing bailout review with lenders, European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has said admitting however that the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) may have to bridge their diverging assessments about the state of the Greek economy.

More specifically, the seasonally adjusted rate was 24.4 in 2016, a marginal 0.1 percent rise compared to December 2015, and a slight 0.1 percent drop in comparison to January 2015.

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) published flash estimates showing that GDP decline in Greece was just 0.5% during the third quarter of 2015. These results, published on Friday, were “especially encouraging” and showed the country’s economy had managed to withstand the impact of capital controls, say finance ministry sources.

Veteran International Monetary Fund statistician Andreas Georgiou was appointed head of Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) in 2010 in an effort to restore credibility to Greek statistics after the debt crisis erupted. On Sunday, he stepped down, informing Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos of his decision not to accept the extension of his term effective on that day.
