Small Grocery Stores Drive Bulgaria's GDP Despite Hypermarket Competition

Small grocery stores contribute approximately 10% to Bulgaria's GDP. For the first time in a decade, traditional trade is outpacing the growth of modern trade, reversing a long-standing trend that had led to the closure of 10,000 family-owned stores in recent years.

Bulgaria: Non-Food Retail Chains Resume Work after Threat to Stage Protests

Under the threat of a possible protest issued by non-food hypermarkets  yesterday, the authorities decided to open them. Health Minister Kostadin Angelov announced that this will be written down in an order he will make public today. It will require stores to provide 8-10 sq m of shopping area per each customer.
