Tennis: Simona Halep runs for WTA Player of the Month

Romanian female tennis player Simona Halep, next Monday to become the worlds' No.2, runs for the title of the WTA Player of the Month and also for that of the WTA Rising Star Of The Month.

Competing for the WTA Player of the Month in July are Romania's Halep (22 of age), American Serena Williams, world's No.1, and Danish Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki effortlessly through to 2nd round in Istanbul Cup

Top-seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark easily advanced to the second round of the Istanbul Cup, defeating Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-0, 6-0 on July 15.

Wozniacki allowed no hope for the 17-year-old, dubbed as the leading player in her age group, and finished with a “double bagel,” giving away no games.

Tennis: Halep and other four Romanians to be seen playing on Thursday at the BRD Bucharest Open

Simona Halep is going to play in the rounds of sixteen of the singles event of the $250,000-equipped BRD Bucharest Open (WTA) tournament on Thursday, while four other Romanian players, Raluca Olaru, Irina Begu, Elena Bogdan, Alexandra Cadantu are going to play in the doubles event of the same competition taking place at the BNR Arenas in the Romanian capital.

Jankovic ousted at Eastbourne

LONDON - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic suffered a surprise first-round loss at the WTA tournament in Eastbourne to American Madison Keys 6-3, 6-3.

Third seed Jankovic had the role of favorite in the match against the 19-year-old World No. 47, but Keys staged an upset in just over one hour, avenging her own first-round loss to Jankovic at last year's US Open.

Bulgaria’s Pironkova Suffers 1st Round Loss in Indian Wells

Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova suffered a rough defeat in the first round of the tennis tournament in Indian Wells.

Pironkova lost 2:6, 1:6 to USA's Madison Keys in a match which lasted only 53 minutes. This was the first meeting between the two players.

Keys will face Italian Roberta Vinci in the second round.
