Accession of Serbia to the European Union

Fuele: First two chapters may open by end of year

NEW YORK - EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele believes that there is a chance for Brussels and Belgrade to cross an important threshold before the year ends and to open the first two of 35 policy chapters which Serbia must address to join the EU.

"I think we still believe that would be possible before the end of this year," Fuele said in an interview for Wall Street Journal.

More experts needed in administration to join EU faster

BELGRADE - Serbia's public servants have to be fewer in number and more efficient, and although the surplus of employees in the administration is not large, they need to be better trained.

This calls for hiring and training civil servants in order to boost the country's EU integration, according to what was concluded at a debate on measuring the performance of the public sector.

BELGRADE - Serbia's EU accession talks are proceeding at the planned pace, and the EU backs the austerity measures and economic reforms being carried out by the Serbian government, said a statement released after Saturday's government session, which was also attended by the head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport.
