Bag with two embryos in jars found outside Greek cemetery

Greek police say a black bag left outside a village cemetery in northern Greece contained two jars, each with an embryo in formaldehyde.

The shepherd who found the bag Saturday while tending to his flock in the village of Vryssaki, west of the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, called police immediately after he opened it.

Frontex chief on Lesvos amid search for survivors

Frontex chief Fabrice Leggeri is meeting with officials of the EU's border agency operating on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos as well as representatives of the Greek police, according to reports Wednesday.

Leggeri's visit comes as the search continues Wednesday for survivors of Monday's shipwreck off the island which killed at least 16 migrants.

The Greek financial crime unit (SDOE) released video footage and photos of Greek enforcement agencies raiding a compound in the area of Loutropyrgos, located 30km northwest of Athens, where they confiscated 635,000 amphetamine based pills planned to be shipped to Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq.

Police union files suit over January 10 armed attack on riot squad

The union representing Athens police officers on Wednesday filed suit against the administration of the Greek Police (ELAS) for putting officers' lives at risk.

The suit pertains to a gun attack on January 10 against a riot police unit posted outside the offices of the PASOK party in the downtown district of Exarchia, in which one policeman was injured.

Fire service workers take to streets of Athens

Members of the Greek fire service took part in a demonstration in central Athens Friday, demanding new hirings and better working conditions. "We do not have the luxury of sitting back and watching a gloomy future stretch out before us," the union representing Greek fire service workers said in a statement, bemoaning the impact of austerity on livelihoods.

Greek, British police smash gang supplying forged passports to migrants

Greek and British police said on Monday they had broken up a criminal network that supplied forged travel documents to hundreds of illegal migrants trying to reach Britain and northern European countries.

The gang supplied more than a thousand lost or stolen passports and travel documents that were procured from accomplices in Barcelona, Spain, in the past six months.

Greek police unveil new vehicles

Members of Greece's crime prevention unit (OPKE) are seen standing next to a new batch of police patrol vehicles unveiled Friday at the headquarters of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) in Athens. A total of 25 semi-armored Toyota Land Cruisers will be put at the service of OPKE and EKAM, the country's special anti-terrorist unit.
