Officers at stadiums to get allowance

The government plans to give an allowance to police officers who are in charge of checks at sports stadiums, as announced by the minister of citizen protection, Giannis Oikonomou, while speaking to Skai Television. 

"Police officers, among other civil servants and officials, will benefit from the increases we will have from January," he said.

Woman arrested over homemade Molotov cocktails

Police have arrested a 28-year-old woman in connection with seven homemade Molotov cocktails that were found in a backpack on Thursday afternoon at the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

In a statement, the Hellenic Police (ELAS) said the investigation conducted by the Security Directorate concluded that the backpack belongs to the 28-year-old woman.

Amygdaleza detention camp evacuated due to nearby wildfire

As a precautionary measure due to the wildfire spreading in the vicinity, authorities are conducting an evacuation of the Amygdaleza migrant detention camp situated in western Athens. According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the center currently accommodates 700 individuals who will be moved to alternate facilities.

Authorities apprehend suspect connected to migrant confinement video

The Greek authorities have apprehended an individual in connection with a disturbing video posted on social media on Tuesday. The video depicted a man confining a group of 13 undocumented migrants within a cargo trailer, which was being towed by a 4WD vehicle, near the town of Alexandroupoli in northern Greece.

Police officer, businessman arrested on charges of corruption and extortion

An officer of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) has been charged with bribery, abuse of power and breach of duty by the ELAS Internal Affairs unit. 

A private businessman was also arrested and charged with extortion and violation of drug legislation. 

According to an ELAS announcement on Tuesday, the officer demanded bribes not to carry out inspections on certain businesses. 

Police did not use information correctly to prevent soccer violence says minister

Citizen Protection Minister Yiannis Oikonomou admitted in an interview with the public broadcaster ERT on Thursday that "there was information that the Hellenic Police did not use correctly" to prevent the violence between rival football team supporters in Nea Philadelphia, which led to the murder of AEK fan Michalis Katsouris.
