A train of the Proastiakos suburban railway crashed into a passing commercial train near the station of Rouf in western Athens on Tuesday.

No one was injured.

The two trains were running along the same line and both were heading toward Piraeus when the collision occurred.

The accident suspended service of the Proastiakos to Piraeus as crews work to resume operation.

Transport Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis on Wednesday inaugurated a new station on the Athens-Piraeus Proastiakos suburban railway line.

The new station in Tavros, near Athens's southern coast, is located on Constantinoupoleos and Korytsas streets. It is expected to provide service to hundreds of commuters traveling between the capital's downtown area and the country's biggest port.

There are delays on Line 3 of the Athens metro after a passenger reportedly attempted to commit suicide at Doukissis Plakentias station.

Authorities said that the driver saw the young man fall onto the tracks and managed to stop the train in time.

Attiko Metro, the company in charge of the construction and management of the Athens underground system, has announced new traffic regulations during construction of its metro station in Piraeus, south of Athens.

Commuters will be able to travel from Athens to the western port city of Patra by train in just two hours once the construction of the Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) section from Kiato to Rododafni is completed by METKA SA, the listed company that won the project’s tender. This is expected in 2017.

Trainose is to change the timetables of number of train services in northern Greece, it said on Friday.

The changes will apply between July 21 and August 31.

Workers in the state and private sector are to walk off the job on Wednesday, disrupting public services and some modes of transport on the first general strike of the year against austerity.

A new smartcard system that will be installed on the public transport network in Athens will lead to passengers being charged according to the distance their journey covers, which will lead to some commuters paying less than they do now and others more.
