Old Hellenikon Airport to be turned into a dumpster!

Alt. Finance Minister Nadia Valavani issued a decision concerning the government’s plans for Hellenikon International Airport at the Agios Kosmas Seafront. Contrary to dreams for the 12-acred site to be turned into the biggest park in Europe, the airport will be used to serve the countries waste management needs. Rubbish from four municipalities (Glyfada, Alimos, Argyroupolis, Paleo Faliro) will be brought to the site turning the prime seaside real estate into a dumpster!

The historic airport served the country’s travel needs for six decades until 2001 when it was replaced by the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”. The grounds – near the coastal area – are located 7 kilometers south of Athens, near upmarket Glyfada. Plans to turn it into the biggest park in Europe by Lamda Development had been in the air, leaving the airport to decay as the years went by.

These days it is an irregular landfill and home to graffiti artists, drug users, squatters and stray animals. Old tickets litter the floor, reminders of the airport’s heyday. Now, the time has come for the further degradation.
